The chief was here this weekend to get their apt and childcare lined up, as well as meet with the folks at his new gig. He'll be back for good in a month, and chief chick and sawyer about three weeks later. They're going to be living in mariposa lofts, where dr. w and I lived the year we got married.

Last night, we hung at j-watt's house and grabbed some zesto's shakes afterward. One of my favorite parts is getting dr. wintermute and j-watt to put in their orders, b/c there is no way to say, "I want the brown crown," and "I want the nut brown crown," without laughing. mature, I know.

A big moment in any Cincinnatian's life is that first hit, err, taste, of Skyline Chili. When you start young, you get hooked. And I am hooked in a big way. We took Lark to the Montgomery Road Skyline, which is in fact the place where her old man worked his first summer job at the age of 14. She loved it. Chili covered with mounds of cheddar cheese--no surprise.

marriage doesn't suck

We just watched Bridesmaids on HBO OnDemand at my parents' house. Hilarious. However, it's the latest in number of otherwise comedies that insist on uniformly painting marriage as a horrible dungeon while still wanting the audience to root for the protagonist to find happiness by...what else? Getting married.

In this movie, each of the bridesmaids shares that their married lives are terrible. The only exception is the groom's sister, who proceeds to share that the groom is a "let's face it, a complete asshole." So now the bride is going to be in a terrible marriage.

OK, I get it, Bridesmaids is not Film. It's not Cinema. It's not even Comedy. It's comedy. With a lot of gross out humor. So I'm not expecting deep character growth, or even meaningful character arcs. But how about at least one person with a normal marriage. And I don't mean a perfect marriage. Or a boring a marriage. It could even be a sub-par marriage. Or one that is good most of the time, but has some low points. It would at least draw some contrasts, and make for an interesting movie. But in the absence of doing so, what are we left to infer from this fairly consistent (Old School, I Love You Man) record is that marriage blow goats.

It's been my dream that all of my best friends would one day live in one place. I met Chief Chick on the first day of college, literally--she lived two doors down from me on my freshman dorm. I've known Momma Cass since the second week of freshman year (when I was briefly seeing a girl, long forgotten to the history books, on her floor). I met McGruber later that semester when I pledged Chi Phi. The Chief was in my pledge class, and that's how he met Chief Chick. I met Ms. Bloodninja that first semester (albeit, briefly) when my room mate was seeing her room mate in the dorm next to mine. I really got to know her and Bloodninja the following year when he pledged Chi Phi. I've been roommates with McGuber, the Chief, and Bloodninja at various times. I met J-watt at some point in freshman year; at the time, we didn't know that we grew up about 20 minutes from each other in upstate NY. Over the years, we've added three significant others to the group: Dr. W, Jug, Matt, and Rebecca.

Since we graduated from college, there has usually been a few of us in the same city. I've managed to actually live with everyone by moving every few years. Bloodninja and I lived in NY 2000 to 2001; then Bloodninja and I moved to Atlanta, where as roommates I met Dr. W through J-watt, and McGruber moved back to Atlanta that same year, plus Momma Cass was there for a few of those years--basically, the six of us more or less until 2003. That first historic Halloween party of Dr. W's had McGruber, Momma Cass, Jug, Bloodninja, J-watt and me all at Dr. W's house.

Around 2003, Bloodninja and Mrs. Bloodninja ended up in Austin, I went to Boston, and for a week, the Chief and Chief Chick were there. Then they moved to DC. In 2005, when I finished school and returned to Atlanta to get married, McGuber was finish his grad school program at University of Michigan; so for a year, he, J-watt, Dr. W, and me were all together.

Then, Dr. W and I headed to South Florida for her job. Momma Cass and Jug were there for her doctoral program @ FIU, so for a year, the four of us were together. We then headed up to DC, and for four-plus years, we were reunited with the Chief and Chief chick.

And this past summer, we came back to Atlanta. In August, Momma Cass and Jug arrived from Little Rock.

And this past week, the Chief sealed the deal with his new employer. He, Chief Chick and Sawyeroid will be moving to Atlanta later this winter.

9 out of 11 of my best friends will now live in the same city. I've been waiting for this day for so long.

And, perhaps one day, we'll make it 11 out of 11.

neal stephenson video chat

this is the sweet screenshot I got. pretty much summed up the visual appeal of the whole experience.

good reads invited me to a pretty cool web event--a video chat with neal stephenson. as he is one of my all-time favorite authors, i figured this would be very interesting.

turns out that neal is so cerebral, he makes for a very dry interview. in the right hands, this can produce a lot of insights. in the wrong hands, it can be devestatingly boring (as one of my fellow chattsers posted).

guess which one we got?

the interviewer was uber-nerdy. ok, i get that the odds of getting someone with conan o'brien's charisma (or, say, conan himself) to be deep on neal stephenson are very, very slim. still, get someone with a bit of personality. this was like watching a high school news production on public access channel 7 in 1987.

Atlanta is heaven in 2011

The chief, chief chick, and sawyer visited Atlanta last weekend to do some house hunting; the chief also had a job interview. Yes, they are working on moving to Atlanta! We all hung out at j-watt's house on Friday night, and it was pretty much a Blanco reunion--everyone except bloodninja and mrs. bloodninja were there. I looked around and realized: this will be the new normal really soon. mama cass and her brood moved her two weeks ago.

I've long wanted to have everyone in one place (not that this idea is particularly original). Several years, Dr. W and I started a campaign called, "Atlanta is great in 2008." It was tough to get everyone committed to the idea, least of all us, since we had just moved to the DC area. But, in the span of a few months, almost of all our crew is here or in the process of moving here.

Nothing beats getting to live in the same city as my best friends. And I love the idea of our kids growing up together. Here's a pic of Sawyer and Lark hanging out in the pack and play--they are still at the parallel play stage--just kind of noticing and interacting with each other, mainly when one has a toy that the other one wants.

headed to texas for our annual vacation gathering with my 10 closest friends. of this group, I've known seven of them since freshman year of college, and i'm married to the eighth (two other dudes, whom I also consider very close friends, married into the group).

big news this year is that mcguber is bringing a lady friend (pictured here, from his birthday party a few years ago). he told me that he was considering taking her on his big trip in the fall to new zealand, and I told him that he damn well better take a smaller trip with her first.

while I think we are a pretty welcoming group, I gotta feel for a new person. the collective maturity of the (guys in our) group ranges between 10 and 14 years old. it's one long stream of mom jokes, mixed in with obscure star wars references, and inside jokes that are so inside, sometimes even dr w. doesn't get the reference. and, our new guest will have to sing and hang out in a bathing suit. there's also often a win-or-die-trying board game / made up athletic competition (last year, it was an improvised version of water polo that combined the best part of quidditch, basketball and freeze tag, in lake hamilton).

if she can hang with us for a week, she'll have earned her trip to new zealand.

We are here. First weekend...I hit metalsome with big game. A great evening that originally called for a final-final at the Clairmont, but that wasn't in the cards for us.

Driving to metalsome made me realize how much I love Atlanta. My internal monologue as I drove from midtown to the highlands:
- Turn from 14 onto Piedmont, passing signs for Screen on the Green. Think of how one my first dates with Dr. W was at Screen on the Green. Think of J-watt, Fuckface, and Chall3po, and our blue bucket of beer (which I still have).
- Pass the Prado. Remember that Gasparyan used to live there.
- Pass Botanical Garden, where Dr. W and I got married.
- Wow, I've driven 1/4 of a mile already have three great psychological landmarks.
- Pass Smith Old's Bar. We used to go here for trivia. This is where Fuckface and I met Chall3po.
- Turn on Monroe. Oh yeah, this is where Breaking H used to live.
- Pass Grady High School. Big Game graduated from there. In college, we scrimmaged his alma mater's team.
- Turn left onto Virginia. This is the park where I proposed to Dr. W. Sadly, it is also the park that memorializes the family that was killed when lightning struck a tree, causing a branch to fall on the car, killing the wife and her two young kids.
- Turn right onto N. Highland. Too many memories to count. Mo's & Joe's--where I learned to drink PBR by the pitcher (before hipsters made drinking PBR ironic).
- At ten high. Time for metalsome.

The chief and I made a farewell stop to one of my favorite DC traditions: the main street fish market. we bought a lot of fresh seafood to bring home and grill, and of course grabbed Jimmy Special Super Delight. Seven flavors, known only by Jimmy.

Post-haste, greetings from Cambridge. Was there for the big H business plan competition. The start-up that I've been working on with momma cass has taken off nicely. We were selected the winning entry in DC, then in NY, and came to Boston for the global finals, joining 11 other teams from around the world (Dubai, Sao Paulo, Manilla, etc).

Charlie's Kitchen was my favorite place back in the day. Watched the Red Sox win the '04 series and celebrated my 27th birthday there, too.
