dragonfly

greetings from the homewood suites in gainesville. flipping between sportcenter and kelly ripa co-hosting with david duchovny, reading my new william gibson book, and eating the free breakfast the dr. wintermute was nice enough to go down and get for me from the lobby.

last night we went to dragonfly, one of our favorite restaurants, and by far the best sushi i've ever had. we had a great time there last night--dr w's parents, her mom's sister and her husband, and of course macgruber and the cheese and the best man. i was actually ready to hit the bars afterwards, but we headed back to the hotel. considering that i was going on 120 minutes of sleep yesterday, it was a good call. having a major software release, monthly sales meeting, leaving for a wedding, and a 9:00 pm soccer game meant working three days in a row from 6 am to 11 pm. yesterday, worked until 8, went to play soccer, then was back working by 11, and finished up at 3:30 in the morning. slept until 5:15, and then got ready to catch the 6:00 am cab to the airport. there are about four days every year where i drink coffee, and yesterday was one of them.

we hung out a bit in the cheese's room while they put together gift baskets of jelly beans in their wedding colors (green, white, and pink).

attention to detail...this girl has got it[!

[btw, dr. wintermute just announced that she has bel biv devoe's 'poison' stuck in her head. great song]

so for now, we're chilling in the hotel suite that we're sharing the dr. wintermute's parents (thanks, separate bedrooms). they sleep with their bedroom door open, which is a bit uncomfortable. headed downstairs to help magruber move some stuff, and then dr. w is headed to the bridal luncheon.

joe and the rents get here around noon. joe took the red eye from phoenix, and is meeting my parents in orlando (they're flying down from ohio), and then they're driving up here.

rehearsal dinner tonight.

the cheese and macgruber say i do

a ton to catch up on since i last blogged. tom petty concert in atlanta. j-watt joined me and a few co-workers, and we even scored backstage passes. family reunion in the burgh and accompanying pictures.

most importantly, this is the big week of the cheese and macgruber's wedding. we're headed to gainesville tomorrow (although both families are from florida, they chose this city actually because it's where they went to college and me). fun fact: the cheese and macgruber (the macgruber-cheeses, as they will be known, i think) have been together longer than dr. wintermute and me. if you do the math, it means they started dating when they were like eight years old or something.

anyway, i'm really looking forward to the whole long weekend. my rents and my bro are coming in as well. it's a nice feeling to see the families come together like this.

sadly, i don't believe that the tails-top hats-monocles option will be in play for the groomsmen.

now, in the cheese i have certainly met my match in terms of detail-orientation for the wedding. i don't mean that in a bridezilla kind of way (although dr. w likes to joke that i was a groomzilla. and by joking, i mean that she really thinks i was. hey, it was MY day too, and i was going to be damned if things didn't go according to plan).

anyway, the cheese has really done a fantastic job with putting together a fairly large wedding with virtually 100% out-of-town guests, in a town where she and macgruber don't live. for the wintermute wedding, at least dr. w was living in atlanta, and i was visiting every couple of weekends (and spend the summer that we got engaged in atlanta) so we could meet with vendors, scout locations, etc.

this is also a first for us in the dr. wintermute and i are both in the wedding party, and we also get to read a nice passage during the ceremony, which is an honor. appropriately, it is from the simpsons.

will blog more from gainesville. in the homestretch...

in the burgh

in the burgh. shan de la shan and i drove up to philly to pick up jay-z (who just moved in with mpg, but he had had already driven up to the burgh), and then did the nice drive up the burgh. we passed through my hometown, i snapped off a nice picture. unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to stop there.

last night was fun--some good home cooking, some wii, some beers. right before i walked in the door, i told jay-z that i expected to get a terrorist comment within ten seconds, given my beard. sure enough, mpg's mom said that i looked like a terrorist within fifteen seconds.

my brother got in this morning off the red eye from phoenix, and dr. wintermute gets here in a few hours. she just called me from dulles--she's in from amsterdam and through customs.

a few more cousins are arriving tomorrow, and then we'll have the full gang.

dr. w is in holland...isn't that veird?

in my mind, goldmember was perhaps one of mike myers' best characters from austin powers. i loved how he went around saying, "i'm dutch. isn't that veird?"

dr. wintermute left for holland on sunday. she spent yesterday in maastrict, is doing a day trip to amsterdam today, and is presenting researching tomorrow. then she flies back on thursday, arriving in burlington, vt for a big family gathering on my dad's side. should be an excellent weekend. we will have the entire family, including all of my cousins and related significant others together at my uncle and aunt's house (dad's oldest brother) in upstate ny.

this house was the main gathering spot for the family growing up. with one family in boston, one in poughkeepsie, one in schenectady (us), and the fourth in plattsburgh, it made an ideal nexus. additionally, i have a whole slew of cousins, and there's only about five years between the old and the youngest. suffice to say, we grew up very tightly knit. we've been banned from about half the restaurants in plattsburgh, and most of my uncle's neighbors were relieved that our gatherings had stopped. we spent a lot of weekends in the basement, playing just an indoor version of just about every sport. this meant a lot of broken lamps and light bulbs.

the original plan was for all of us to sleep in the basement, old-school style, but saner minds prevailed. dr. w, for one, declared that she was:
  1. not sleeping on the floor
  2. not sharing a room with anyone besides me
so the married folks are in a hotel down the street.

will be a great long weekend. pics from holland and the burgh next week.
