spelling bee

am watching the probably the only event on ESPN where indians are an over-represented minority: the national spelling bee.

go siddarth chand, 7th grader from michigan!

quick trip to nashville. we'll have ck and her dude (very close friends from emory) visiting us this weekend; wolverine and the cheese may be joining us, too.

the loophole

last night dr. wintermute and i strolled into mcginty's trivia night and swaggered out with 2nd place. not bad for a team of two people against 16 other teams, many of which had 4-6 people. at this point, i think if we brought other teammates it would simply be unfair to the other teams. i thought we had one of the better team names, too: the loophole. one harvard mba + one doctorate = $25 in house cash. that's right kids, you too should reach for the sky.

some of my favorate questions from last night:
  • what was malcom x's last night name at birth? (little)
  • name the tune, including band name, album, year, and other umlut bands (godzilla, blue oyster cult, spectres, 1977, queensryche, motorhead, motley crue, husker du)
  • name the tune, including band name, album, year, and where the band members met (peace frog, the doors, morrison hotel, 1973, ucla film school)
  • who was the only player to play in an nfl game and a mlb game in the same day? (deion sanders)

ol' black thunder has still got it

last weekend we went to see the dc united play for my birthday. although i've been to a decent number of pro soccer games in europe, i had never actually been to a mls game, and i don't think dr. wintermute had been to a pro game before. while dr. w always gets me great birthday gifts, this was one my all-time favorites.

we got a little lost getting there and on the way back (hint: anacostia, the area around rfk stadium, is not that great of a neighborhood), but the we had a pleasant surprise when we got there: since vw is the major sponsor of the dc united, the first fifty volkswagens park for free. so instead of paying $15, we parked for free at the base of the stadium! the ol' black thunder has still got it. the really wonderful part is that we paid going in, and then some kind soul who drove in behind us found us in the parking lot and told us about the deal. so i went back to the parking lot dude and got our cizash back. which promptly went to a cold 24 oz modelo in a tall boy can.

we got lucky with a great game. the united played toronto fc, the second place team. dc was a vastly superior team, and put a ball in the back of the net in the first ten minutes. although they dominated the rest of the half, it ended 1-0.

the second half was much more even. dc lost its momentum, and toronto really turned it on. they evened the game, and then put the go-ahead goal in late in the game. i couldn't believe that dc was going to lose. they kept attacking, and put in the equalizer in the 80th minute.

before we even got back in our seats, toronto came back and put in a 35 yard bullet in the 81st minute. i was shocked. i have to say that it was a beautiful shot. i couldn't believe that dc was going to lose like this.

the game entered injury time, and i figured that was it. according to the announcer, there was going to be four minutes of injury time. not enough.

and then the ref called a handball in the penalty box.

a penalty kick.

in the 92nd minute.

dc drilled it, and two minutes later the game was over. really, a game that the united should have won handily, but given how close they came to losing, an exciting, thrilling match.

dc united vs. toronto

greetings from nashville.

this weekend we are going to see the first place dc united, thanks to the tickets dr. wintermute gave me as a birthday gift. should be a great game--they are playing toronto, with whom they are tied for first place.

oh yeah, we have some furniture to put together.
